I had problems downloading the kit, and after a few emails back and forwards with Vanessa I contacted my work’s IT department only to discover that I can’t download things onto my work computer due to security restrictions. Vanessa was very understanding and gave me a refund straight away. So although I haven’t actually used the name change kit, I have given it 4 stars because of the amazing product that I’m sure it is and the suburb customer service I received.

It was confusing knowing which forms I was required to use. I sent away the Queensland name change form and paid $160 only to be told it was not required, lucky for me they were willing to refund the $160. The manual was the part of the kit that helped me the most as I learnt a lot about the name change process for different companies. I imagine I would have wasted a lot of time going back and forth to companies if I didn’t read the manual first. I think it should be more personalised to your state. "This kit has been fantastic, thank you. I loved how it was available per state so I didn't have to sift through a tonne of forms. While I was in the queue at the relevant offices I thought I'd check the forms were still up to date so I could provide the feedback and they all were - so great job!
The only thing I didn't see in the kit (but it's probably more for minorities) is how to change your name if you're a business owner - so through ASIC. I'm still part way through doing this and unsure of the process as yet (wouldn't it be great if it's linked to ATO) but once I know I'll privately message you the info afterthewedding if that helps :)
A couple of tips for brides: if you've got a myGov account, make sure as many of your services are linked in myGov as possible before your name change - then update your details with one service because some are linked and you could save time there. In my case I only have Medicare and ATO but after updating with Medicare (smaller queue to see a cashier) my details were automatically updated with the ATO, brilliant! One less form to complete!
Also, if you change your name within 12 months of getting married you can get a free replacement passport - however the expiry date on the new passport will be the same as the passport in your maiden name. I opted to forego the free replacement passport and do a new application in my married name to get the full 10 years (saves re-doing my visa) but each to their own.
One idea (what I think is really cool but sadly I didn't think of it until now) is on your wedding day take 10 minutes and pop into a chemist and have passport photos taken. Have a witness witness the photo and form (takes a minute) then do your name change a little later - that way your new passport in your married name has a photo of you on your wedding day. Each time you travel with your new husband and open your passport you'll smile with fond memories seeing yourself on your wedding day. Wish I thought of this sooner!
